The Sword Collection

Bait Al Zubair Museum houses a fine collection of curved and straight-edged Omani swords that can be dated from the 17th century to the 20th century, as well as an impressive number of shields. Omani swords styles have hardly changed over the past 600 years.

The sword has a ceremonial role and is worn on formal occasions and during celebrations, for instance a bridegroom will carry a sword, and during Eid men bearing swords often stage special performances. Throughout Arab Islamic history, swords have always been symbols of respect and dignity, and they were often presented as official gifts.

Blades are highly prized and are usually the oldest part of the sword. Scabbards are made out of wood covered with embossed or incised leather and decorated with silver mounts, and excellent examples can be seen in the Bait Al Zubair collection. The oldest sword currently on display has a Portuguese blade dated 1640 that was made in Lisbon. A fine selection of swords and shields can be viewed in the Swords and Firearms Gallery in Bait Al Bagh, the main museum building.
