Museum Management

Bait Al Zubair Museum is the largest private museum in Oman and was the inspiration of Mohammad Al Zubair, Advisor to His Majesty The Sultan for Economic Planning Affairs, a well-known business leader, local personality, accredited patron of the arts and published artist in his own right. Since the Museum’s inception Mohammad Al Zubair has been involved with every aspect of it, and it has become a cherished national treasure.

The Al Zubair family have appointed Bait Al Zubair Foundation to manage the museum’s close-knit team, who undergo specialist in-house training with courses designed to target not only their needs as museum professionals but the needs of visitors as well.

BAIT AL ZUBAIR FOUNDATION

This private foundation, set up by the Al Zubair family, was established in 2005. It manages Bait Al Zubair Museum and projects relating to the culture and heritage, the arts, the community, archaeology, history and publishing. It also specialises in projects related to the arts, particularly Fine Art and Photography, with an aim to promote and encourage Oman’s artists. It offers curatorial and art consultancy services and has worked with Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, The Zubair Corporation, Oman Oil and HSBC. It was responsible for the entire Art and Accessories Package at Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, which has been greatly admired and written about in international and local publications. It has authored The Art Of Barr Al Jissah — the first book on contemporary art in Oman, featuring the artwork of the 29 leading Omani artists whose work was commissioned especially for this luxurious resort. The book also details the traditional Omani inspirations upon which the resort was based, and shows how the architecture interacts with its stunning surrounding environment.

The Foundation is also involved in writing various ethnographic articles and publishing books that are dedicated to promoting global awareness of the Sultanate and the enhancement of national pride.

It has formed a partnership with Dar Al Atta’a (house of giving), a local charitable organisation dedicated to helping the underprivileged, and presents an annual art exhibition called Art for Atta’a (art for giving) held at Bait Al Zubair Museum. The aim of the exhibition is to raise funds for the charity (with 50% of sales going to the charity and 50% going to the artist) and provide exposure and promote up-and-coming artists working in Oman.

The Foundation was a driving force behind the popular ‘Celebrate’ photography competition, exhibition and tuition, initiated to encourage students in the field of photography, which was organised with The Zubair Corporation in association with the Ministry of Education to mark the 40th anniversary of The Zubair Corporation.

The Foundation also lectures on various themes relating to Oman’s rich cultural heritage and has been invited to speak at the British Museum, the Historical Association of Oman, the British Embassy Muscat, the Embassy of the United States of America Muscat, the Royal Netherlands Embassy Muscat, the Indian Embassy Muscat, the Protestant Church of Oman, the Al Amana Centre (that deals with inter-faith dialogue between Muslims and Christians), the American Women’s Group and the Women’s Guild of Oman.
